The BTS3160D is a latching single-channel low-end power switch in a PG-TO-252-5-13 package that provides embedded protection. The power transistor is built from an N-channel vertical power MOSFET. The device is controlled by an intelligent power technology controller chip. The device is capable of switching a variety of resistive, inductive, and capacitive loads. For lamp loads, the inrush current of the lamp must be considered, i.e. 8 to 10 times the rated current. The maximum inrush current must be lower than the minimum short-circuit shutdown current. the ESD protection on the VS and IN/Fault pins is related to ground.

The BTS3160D is powered from the VS pin. This pin can be connected to the battery line. The supply voltage is monitored by an undervoltage lockout circuit. The gate driver unit enables the device to operate in the low ohmic range even with a 3.3 V input signal. For PWM applications, the device provides smooth turn-on and turn-off with embedded edge shaping to reduce EMC noise. The overvoltage protection feature is used to provide protection in the event of a sudden load drop or inductive shutdown condition. The power MOSFET limits the drain-source voltage if it becomes too high. This function can be used even when there is no power supply. Over-temperature protection is provided to prevent the device from overheating due to overload and poor cooling conditions.

To reduce device stress, edge shaping is disabled during thermal shutdown. After thermal shutdown, the device remains in the shutdown state until the latch is reset by the IN-Low signal. Under high dynamic overload conditions such as short circuit, the device will shut down if a certain load current is reached. Short circuit shutdown is a latching function. The device will remain off until the latch is reset by the IN-Low signal. To reduce device stress, the edge shaping function will be disabled during short-circuit shutdown.
