The AD8317ACPZ is a demodulating logarithmic amplifier that precisely converts RF input signals into corresponding dB outputs. It employs progressive compression technology in a cascaded amplifier chain, with a detector unit in each stage. The device operates in two modes: measurement and control. It maintains precise logarithmic consistency for signals ranging from 1 MHz to 8 GHz and can operate at frequencies up to 10 GHz. The typical input dynamic range is 55 dB (referenced to 50 Ω), with an error of less than ±3 dB. The AD8317ACPZ has a response time of 6 ns/10 ns (fall time/rise time) and can detect RF burst pulses with pulse frequencies exceeding 50 MHz. Under ambient temperature conditions, the device exhibits excellent logarithmic intercept stability. It is powered by a 3.0 V to 5.5 V supply. Typical power consumption is 22 mA, and can be reduced to 200 μA in disabled mode.
The AD8317ACPZ can be configured to provide a control voltage to a power amplifier or to provide a measurement output on the VOUT pin. Since the output can be used for controller applications, broadband noise issues have been specially addressed to reduce them to a minimum. In this mode, the setpoint control voltage is applied to the VSET pin.
The feedback loop through the RF amplifier is closed via VOUT, whose output adjusts the amplifier's output to the amplitude corresponding to VSET. The AD8317 can provide an output of 0 V to (VPOS − 0.1 V) via the VOUT pin, suitable for controller applications. As a measurement device, VOUT is externally connected to VSET to generate the output voltage VOUT, which is a linear dB-reduction function of the RF input signal amplitude.
The logarithmic slope is -22 mV/dB, determined by the VSET interface. When using the INHI input, the intercept is 15 dBm (based on a 50 Ω, CW input). These parameters are highly stable and do not vary with power supply voltage or temperature fluctuations.
The AD8317ACPZ is manufactured using a SiGe bipolar IC process and is packaged in a 2 mm × 3 mm, 8-pin LFCSP package, with an operating temperature range of -40°C to +85°C.
