Product Description

The AD9166BBPZ is a high-performance, wideband, on-chip vector signal generator featuring a high-speed JESD204B serialiser/ deserialiser (SERDES) interface, a flexible 16-bit digital data path, a quadrature (IQ) digital-to-analogue converter (DAC) core, and an integrated differential-to-single-ended output buffer amplifier, capable of driving loads up to 10 GHz at 50 Ω.


The DAC core is based on a four-switch architecture, allowing configuration changes to increase the effective update rate of the DAC core from 6.4 GHz DAC sampling clock configuration to up to 12.8 GSPS, with an analog output bandwidth typically ranging from DC to 9.0 GHz. The digital data path includes multiple interpolation filter stages, a direct digital frequency synthesiser (DDS) block with multiple numerically controlled oscillators (NCOs) supporting fast frequency hopping (FFH), and additional FIR85 and anti-Sinc filter stages for flexible spectrum planning.


Differential buffering eliminates the need for a broadband balun and supports the full analogue output bandwidth of the DAC core. DC-coupled outputs can provide baseband waveforms without requiring external bias triodes or similar circuits, making the AD9166BBPZ particularly suitable for applications in the most demanding high-speed, ultra-wideband RF transmissions.


Various filter stages allow the AD9166BBPZ to be configured for lower data rates while maintaining a high DAC clock rate, simplifying filter requirements and reducing overall system size, weight, and power consumption.


The data interface receiver includes up to 8 JESD204B SERDES channels, each capable of carrying 12.5 Gbps. For greater flexibility, the receiver can be fully configured based on data rate, SERDES channel count, and the channel mapping required by the JESD204B transmitter.


In 2x non-return-to-zero (NRZ) mode (with FIR85 enabled), the AD9166 can reconstruct the RF carrier from true DC to the edge of the third Nyquist zone or reconstruct an analogue bandwidth of up to 9 GHz from true DC.


In mixed mode, the AD9166BBPZ can reconstruct the RF carrier in the second and third Nyquist zones while consuming lower power and maintaining performance comparable to the 2x NRZ mode.


In baseband mode, such as return-to-zero (RZ) and 1x NRZ, the AD9166BBPZ is ideal for reconstructing the RF carrier from true DC to the edge of the first Nyquist zone while consuming less power compared to 2x NRZ mode.


The orthogonal DDS block can be configured as a digital upconverter to upconvert I/Q data samples to the desired positions across all three Nyquist zones of the spectrum.


The DDS also includes a set of 32 numerically controlled oscillators (NCOs), each with its own 32-bit phase accumulator. When combined with a 100 MHz serial peripheral interface (SPI), the DDS enables phase-coherent FFH with phase establishment times as low as 300 ns.


The AD9166BBPZ uses a common SPI interface configuration that monitors all register states. The AD9166 is available in a 324-pin, 15 mm × 15 mm, 0.8 mm pitch BGA_ED package.
