The LT1168CS8 is a low-power, precision instrumentation amplifier that requires only a single external resistor to set a gain of 1 to 10,000. The low voltage noise of 10nV/√Hz (at 1kHz) is not compromised by the low power consumption (typically 350μA for ±15V supplies). The wide supply voltage range of ±2.3V to ±18V makes the LT1168CS8 suitable for a wide range of industrial applications as well as battery-powered applications.
The LT1168CS8's high accuracy stems from a maximum nonlinearity of 20ppm and a maximum gain error of 0.4% (G = 10). Previous monolithic instrumentation amplifiers could not handle a 2k load resistor, while the LT1168's nonlinearity specifications are tailored for loads as low as 2k. The LT1168CS8 is laser-trimmed to achieve very low input offset voltage (maximum 40μV), drift (0.3μV/°C), high CMRR (90dB, G = 1), and PSRR (103dB, G = 1). A low input bias current of up to 250pA is achieved through the use of an ultra-β manufacturing process. The output can handle capacitive loads of up to 1000pF in any gain configuration, while providing ESD protection of up to 13kV (human body model) at the input. The LT1168, using two 5k external resistors, complies with the IEC 1000-4-2 Level 4 specification.
The LT1168CS8 is a pin-compatible, improved second source version of the AD620 and INA118. Compared to discrete op-amp resistor designs, the LT1168CS8, packaged in an 8-pin SO package, significantly reduces the PCB area required. These advantages make the LT1168CS8 a cost-effective solution for precision instrumentation amplifier applications.
