The TPS23881RTQR is an 8-channel Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) controller designed to deliver power to Ethernet cables in accordance with the IEEE 802.3bt standard. These eight discrete power channels may be configured in any combination of 2-pair (single-channel) or 4-pair (dual-channel) PoE ports. The PSE controller detects Powered Devices (PDs) with valid characteristics, determines the device's power requirements based on its classification, and supplies power accordingly.

The TPS23881RTQR builds upon the TPS23880 by reducing the current-sensing resistor, offering more precise programmable power limiting, capacitance measurement, and ROM-based operation (refer to the device comparison table). The TPS23881 is also compatible with TI's FirmPSE system firmware, which provides a fully configurable solution for controlling multiple TPS23881 devices within a system capable of delivering up to 48 four-wire PoE power ports.

Port-dedicated ADCs enable continuous port current monitoring and parallel step measurements for reduced port turn-on times. Programmable port power limits with ±2.5% accuracy extend maximum power from 90W to over 125W. The 200mΩ current sensing resistor and external FET architecture allow designs to balance size, efficiency, thermal management, and solution cost requirements.
