The NCP1200, housed in a SO-8 or DIP-8 package, is a major leap forward in the implementation of ultra-compact switch-mode power supplies. Thanks to a new concept, the circuit can implement a complete off-line battery charger or standby SMPS with very few external components. in addition, the integrated output short-circuit protection allows designers to build very low-cost AC/DC wall-mount adapters in connection with simple feedback schemes. With an internal architecture operating at a fixed 40 kHz, 60 kHz or 100 kHz frequency, the controller can drive low-gate charge switching devices such as IGBTs or MOSFETs, thus requiring very low operating power consumption. Thanks to current mode control, the NCP1200 greatly simplifies the design of reliable and inexpensive off-line converters with excellent audio sensitivity and intrinsic per-pulse control. For example, when the output power demand disappears and the current setpoint drops below a specific value, the IC enters a so-called skip-cycle mode, providing excellent energy efficiency at light loads. Because this occurs at low peak currents, no noise is emitted. Finally, the IC is self-powered to the DC rail, eliminating the need for an auxiliary winding. This feature ensures operation in the presence of low output voltages or short circuits.
