Product Description

The SN65HVD1050DR meets or exceeds the specifications of the ISO 11898 standard and is suitable for applications using Controller Area Network (CAN).


As a CAN transceiver, this device provides differential transmission capability for the bus and differential reception capability for the CAN controller, with a signal rate of up to 1 megabits per second (Mbps) (1)


The SN65HVD1050DR is specifically designed for operation in extremely harsh environments. Therefore, the device features cross-line, overvoltage, and ground loss protection (-27 V to 40 V), over-temperature shutdown, a common-mode voltage range of -12 V to 12 V, and can withstand voltage transients of -200 V to 200 V as specified by the ISO 7637 standard.


Pin 8 provides two different operating modes: high-speed mode or silent mode. High-speed mode is selected by connecting the S pin (Pin 8) to ground.


If a high logic level is applied to the S pin of the SN65HVD1050DR, the device enters listen-only mode, where the driver is disabled while the receiver remains fully functional.


In silent mode, all bus activity is passed through the receiver output to the local protocol controller. When data transmission is required, the local protocol controller reverses this low-current silent mode by applying a logic low level to the S pin to restore full-function operation.


The dominant timeout circuit in the SN65HVD1050DR prevents the driver from blocking network communication due to hardware or software failures. The timeout circuit is triggered by the falling edge of TXD (pin 1). If no rising edge is detected before the circuit's timeout constant expires, the driver is disabled. The circuit is then reset by the next rising edge of TXD.  


Vref (pin 5) can serve as a VCC/2 voltage reference to stabilise the output common-mode voltage point.


The SN65HVD1050DR is suitable for an operating temperature range of –40°C to 125°C.
