The ADMV4821BCCZ is a silicon germanium (SiGe) 24 GHz millimetre wave (mmW) to 29.5 GHz millimetre wave 5G beamformer. This radio frequency integrated circuit (RF IC) is highly integrated and includes 16 independent channels with transmit and receive capabilities. ADMV4821BCCZ supports 8 horizontal polarisation and 8 vertical polarisation antennas via independent RFV and RFH input/output shared pins.
In transmit mode, RFV and RFH input signals are split via two independent 1:8 power dividers and transmitted through eight independent corresponding transmit channels. In this mode, each channel includes a vector modulator (VM) for phase control and two digital variable gain amplifiers (DVGAs) for amplitude control.
In receive mode, the input signals are transmitted through two sets of eight receive channels (vertical or horizontal) and combined via an independent 8:1 combiner connected to the RFV pin and an independent 8:1 combiner connected to the RFH pin. In this mode, each channel includes a VM for phase control and a DVGA for amplitude control.
The VM provides a full 360° phase adjustment range in both transmit and receive modes. The VM offers 6-bit resolution, corresponding to 5.625° phase steps.
In transmit mode, the total dynamic range adjustment range of the DVGA is 32.4 dB. DVGAs provide 5-bit or 6-bit resolution, corresponding to 1.0 dB or 0.5 dB amplitude steps, respectively.
In receive mode, the DVGA allows for 17.1 dB of dynamic range adjustment. The DVGA also provides 6-bit resolution, resulting in 0.5 dB amplitude steps. DVGAs provide flat phase response across the entire gain range.
The transmitter channel includes an independent power detector for detecting and calibrating the gain of each channel and gain mismatch between channels. Connect the RF port of the ADMV4821BCCZ directly to a patch antenna to create a dual-polarisation millimetre-wave 5G subarray.
Users can program the ADMV4821 via a 3-wire or 4-wire serial port interface (SPI). The low-dropout (LDO) regulator integrated on the chip generates a 1.8 V power supply for the SPI circuit, reducing the number of required power domains. Multiple SPI modes are provided for fast startup and control during normal operation.
Users can set the amplitude and phase of each channel individually or program multiple channels simultaneously via on-chip memory to achieve beamforming. The on-chip memory can store up to 256 beam positions, which can be arbitrarily combined and assigned to transmitter or receiver modes. Additionally, four address pins allow control of up to 16 devices on the same serial bus via SPI. Dedicated horizontal and vertical polarisation load pins synchronise all devices within the same array. Horizontal and vertical polarisation transmit and receive mode control pins (TRXV and TRXH) enable rapid switching between transmit and receive modes.
The ADMV4821BCCZ is housed in a compact, thermally enhanced 10 mm × 10 mm, RoHS-compliant land grid array (LGA) package. The ADMV4821BCCZ operates over a temperature range of −40°C to +95°C. The LGA package allows users to dissipate heat from the top of the package, enabling optimal thermal management, and permits flexible antenna placement on the opposite side of the printed circuit board (PCB).
