The ADMV4801BCCZ is a silicon germanium (SiGe) 24 GHz to 29.5 GHz millimetre wave (mmW) 5G beamformer. This radio frequency integrated circuit (RF IC) is highly integrated and features 16 independent transmit and receive channels. In transmit mode, the RF front-end (RFC) input signal is split via a 1:16 power divider and transmitted through 16 independent transmit channels. In receive mode, the input signal is received through 16 independent channels and transmitted to the RFC pins via a 16:1 combiner. In transmit mode, each channel includes a vector modulator (VM) to control phase and two digital variable gain amplifiers (DVGA) to control amplitude. In receive mode, each channel includes a VM to control phase and a DVGA to control amplitude. The vector modulator (VM) provides a full 360° phase adjustment range in both transmit and receive modes, with 6-bit resolution corresponding to 5.625° phase steps. In transmit mode, the total dynamic range adjustment range of the DVGA is 34 dB, with 6-bit resolution corresponding to 0.5 dB amplitude steps, and 5-bit resolution corresponding to 1 dB amplitude steps. In receive mode, the total dynamic range is 17 dB, with 6-bit resolution corresponding to 0.5 dB amplitude steps. The DVGA provides a flat phase response across the entire gain range. The transmit channel includes an independent power detector, enabling detection and calibration of gain for each channel, as well as detection of gain mismatch between channels. The ADMV4801BCCZ RF port can be directly connected to a patch antenna to build a dual-polarised, millimetre-wave, 5G subarray.
Programming of the ADMV4801BCCZ can be achieved via a 3-wire or 4-wire serial port interface (SPI). The low-dropout regulator (LDO) integrated on the chip generates a 1.8 V supply for the SPI circuit, thereby reducing the number of required power domains. Multiple SPI modes are available for selection to enable fast startup and control during normal operation. The amplitude and phase of each channel can be set individually, or multiple channels can be programmed simultaneously via on-chip memory to achieve beamforming. On-chip memory can store up to 256 beam positions, which can be assigned for transmit or receive mode. A dedicated load pin enables synchronisation of all devices within the same array. Transmit and receive mode control pins are provided for rapid switching between transmit and receive modes.
The ADMV4801BCCZ is housed in a compact, thermally enhanced, 10 mm × 10 mm, RoHS-compliant land grid array (LGA) package. The ADMV4801 operates within a temperature range of −40°C to +95°C. The LGA package allows heat dissipation from the top of the package, enabling efficient thermal management, and permits flexible antenna placement on the opposite side of the printed circuit board (PCB).
