The LT1796IS8 transceiver has built-in fault tolerance to safely withstand industrial and automotive environments. Discrete protection devices are not required. The bus interface pins are capable of withstanding voltage faults up to ±60V (relative to ground potential) without damage to the device. Faults can occur while the transceiver is running, down, or powered off. The on-chip ESD protection features circuitry that can withstand air discharge up to ±15kV and contact mode discharge testing up to ±8kV, fully compliant with IEC-1000-4-2 specifications. Loss of power or ground connections will not damage the IC.

The circuit can operate at data rates up to 125kbaud. A slew rate control pin controls the transmit data pulse edge to suppress EMI and reflection problems on improperly terminated lines. The high output current drive allows the use of inexpensive PVC cables with impedances as low as 72Ω. 100kΩ input impedance allows up to 256 transceivers per data network.
