Marvell® Alaska® 88E2040 (88E2040LA1-BUT4C000) is a new NBASE-T Alliance compliant Ethernet transceiver for 2.5G and 5G data rates over Cat5e cables. The device is manufactured using a 28nm process, which allows for lower cost and extremely low power consumption. These devices use digital signal processing (DSP) technology to enable data transfer rates of up to 5Gbps for low-cost Cat5e Ethernet cables, replacing optical technology for applications such as 802.11ac access point backhaul, switches, servers, workstations, and high-end PCS. The device supports Class 6 (shielded or unshielded), Class 6a (enhanced) and Class 7 cables, as well as Class 5e cables at distances up to 100m.

These devices support a variety of host interfaces (2500BASE-X, 5000BASE-R, SGMII) as well as 10G host interfaces such as USXGMII and Rate-matched XFI/RXAUI. The transceiver family is also fully backward compatible with low-speed legacy Ethernet (1000/100/10Mbps) on the line side.

Marvell Alaska 88E2010 also features Marvell's Advanced Virtual Cable Tester (VCT) technology for cable fault detection and active cable performance monitoring. With advanced digital signal processing (DSP) technology, the transceiver can actively monitor cable performance and determine cable length and type. It can detect open and short circuits and report the location of faults.
