According to a report released by market research firm Gartner, the global semiconductor market sales increased by 26.3% year-on-year to $595 billion last year, and Samsung Electronics beat Intel to regain the first place.
Although the shortage of chips last year had a certain impact on foundry production (OEM), sales of 5G smartphones were boosted by rising sales of 5G smartphones, logistics and raw material prices that pushed up the average selling price (ASP) of semiconductors, according to the report.
Samsung Electronics' semiconductor sales last year was US$73.2 billion, and after three years, it once again beat Intel to regain the market share champion. The semiconductor market shares of the two companies (based on sales) were 12.3% and 12.2%, respectively.
In terms of chip types, the sales of memory chips led by Korean companies such as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix accounted for 27.9% of the total chip market sales last year, and sales benefited from a 33.2% year-on-year increase in memory prices. Automotive chips increased by 34.9% year-on-year, the largest increase. Smartphone chips grew 24.6%.
