TSMC: 2nm chips will be put into production in 2025 using GAA technology for the first time
TSMC predicts that HPC (high performance computing) will be its fastest growing segment this year. HPC generated 41% of revenue last quarter, just slightly more than the 40% generated by smartphones.
On April 18, during the first-quarter earnings call, TSMC reported that it was going all out to develop next-generation process nodes. The semiconductor giant plans to put its first 3-nanometer processes into production later this year and have a 2-nanometer process ready by the end of 2025.
It is reported that TSMC used GAA FET (full surround gate transistor) for the first time on N2, gradually replacing finFET (fin field effect transistor). Samsung has already started using their version of GAA, and Intel plans to implement theirs in 2024.
In the second half of 2022, TSMC will put the N3 process into production. A year later, or possibly sooner, it will be ready to put the N3E process into production, an "enhanced performance, power and yield" version of the N3.
TSMC predicts that HPC (high performance computing) will be its fastest growing segment this year. HPC generated 41% of revenue last quarter, just slightly more than the 40% generated by smartphones. IoT and automotive came in third and fourth, generating 8% and 5% of revenue, respectively.
