The AD8436ACPZ is a new generation of precision transwire, low power, true RNS-to-DC converters that can be loaded with multiple options. It can accurately calculate the DC equivalent of the RMS value of an AC waveform, including complex modes powered by a switching mode power supply and controlled by a three-terminal bidirectional thyristor. It provides high precision conversion over a wide range of input levels (see Figure 2) and temperatures. New ADI technology ensures accuracy of ≤±0.5% and output offset of ≤10 μV. When the CF value is between 1 and 10, the crest factor error is less than 0.5%.

The AD8436 delivers true RMS results at a lower cost than misleading peak, mean or digital solutions. With no programming costs or processor overhead, the 4 mm x 4 mm package makes it easy to implement space-tight applications. On-chip buffer amplifiers provide a wide selection of suitable rms to dc converters, regardless of cost. Lower cost applications require only one external averaging capacitor. The built-in high-impedance FET buffer provides an interface that can be used for external attenuators, frequency compensation, or to drive low-impedance loads. With a matching pair of internal resistors, it is easy to achieve gain configurations of 2 or higher, and the available input range can be extended to lower levels. The AD8436 features low-power precision input buffering, making it ideal for portable multimeters and other battery-powered applications.
