The P82B96DPZ is a bipolar integrated circuit that creates a non-latching, bi-directional logic interface between the normal I2C bus and a range of other bus configurations. It can connect I2C bus logic signals to similar buses with different voltage and current levels.
For example, it can connect a 350 μA SMBus, a 3.3 V logic device, and a 15 V level and/or low impedance line to improve noise immunity on longer buses.

Splits IC bus signals into a pair of forward/reverse Tx/Rx, Ty/Ry signals for connection to optoisolators and similar devices that require unidirectional input and output signal paths.
