Omdia reports today, February 25, that cameras, millimeter wave radar, ultrasonic radar and lidar are all commonly used sensors in autonomous driving today. The development and advancement of sensor technology is critical to improving the vehicle's ability to sense in complex driving environments.

The report states that the camera is the most indispensable sensor for today's smart cars. In 2019, the average number of cameras installed per vehicle worldwide will be just 2.2, and this number is expected to double by 2026.

In terms of millimetre wave radar, Omdia expects autonomous driving systems at Level 3 and above to be equipped with an average of 5-8 millimetre wave radars to enable features such as blind spot detection (BSD), lane change assist (LCA) and rear collision warning (RCA).

In terms of LIDAR, the report says that the future will see a move towards miniaturised, high-resolution (64, 128, even 200 channels, etc.) and low-cost solid-state solutions. In addition, the integration of LIDAR into a single chip will be a long-term technology development direction.

Omdia says that the demand for all types of sensors will be amplified in the coming decades as the replacement of conventional fuel vehicles by smart cars accelerates. The advancement of autonomous driving will also promote continued innovation in sensor technology, driving sensor performance to even higher levels.
