December 5, - Marvell yesterday announced Ara, the industry's first 3nm PAM4 optical DSP chip, which reduces power consumption by more than 20 percent for 1.6Tbps high-speed optical modules, lowering operating costs and enabling AI workloads to meet the demands of high-performance optical communications at constrained power consumption.

Built on Marvell's sixth-generation PAM4 optical DSP technology, the Ara chip features eight 200 Gbps electrical channels to the host device and eight 200 Gbps optical channels interfacing with a variety of optical components to achieve a total bandwidth of 1.6Tbps with support for standard Ethernet and Infiniband.


The Ara chip was created in the context of the growing need for high-speed optical interconnects in hyperscale AI data centres as more AI hardware adopts 200Gbps I/O interfaces.


Ara leverages advanced 3nm technology to dramatically reduce power consumption, setting a new industry standard and driving mass adoption of 1.6 Tbps connectivity for AI infrastructures,’ said Marvell's vice president of the Optical Connectivity Product Battalion.

With a co-optimised companion TIA, our next-generation PAM4 optical DSP platform enables customers to scale generative AI and large-scale computing applications with best-in-class performance and unmatched power efficiency.


Marvell said the Ara chip will be sampling to select customers in the first quarter of 2025.
