On February 6, ZTE announced that it had successfully completed the world's first on-board verification of 5G NTN (non-terrestrial network) technology in the S-band, together with industry partners such as China Telecom Satellite Corporation, ZTE Corporation, Bai Cai Bang, China Academy of Information and Communications Technology and China Telecom Guangdong Corporation.

The verification adopted the 3GPP R17 NTN protocol, breaking through the protocol matching problems of frequency synchronization, time synchronization and timing relationship enhancement caused by geostationary orbit satellite communications, realizing the independent and controllable 5G NTN end-to-end full link connectivity, and initially verifying the feasibility of the 3GPP R17 NTN protocol-based direct mobile phone connection to satellites and the integrated Internet of Things (IoT) technology solution.

ZTE said that this verification is another important achievement in the field of integration technology between heaven and earth, following the completion of the world's first R17 NTN on-board test in L-band in June 2022, which will give a strong impetus to the development of satellite-terrestrial convergence network and communication technology, and help the integration between heaven and earth to achieve greater commercial success.

The test terminal used for this technology launch verification is based on the Ziguang Zhanrui R17 NTN chip, which connects China's self-developed Tiantong-1 satellite, as well as a signaling station, 5G NTN base station and terrestrial core network through the S-band, to achieve interconnection with the terrestrial network. It also completed the communication process of broadcasting, access and data transmission, realizing multi-terminal access and multi-terminal interoperability, and the performance met expectations. The verification results confirm that the terminals developed based on ZENITH can be used in the direct satellite connection scenario for mobile phones and the integrated IoT scenario for heaven and earth.

The R17 NTN technology facilitates the convergence and deployment of 5G and satellite networks. On the one hand, it extends the coverage of 5G networks in areas such as oceans, deserts and high altitudes, bridges the digital divide between remote and developed areas, and promotes the harmonious development of digital society and economy; on the other hand, it enables satellite networks to share the industrial scale of cellular communication networks, reduces terminal and network costs, and provides an opportunity to realise direct mobile phone connection to satellites and the IoT between heaven and earth.
