On 20 August, foreign media reported that Apple is secretly evaluating several artificial intelligence hardware concepts, including smart home displays, security devices, and a desktop robot. The desktop robot is planned to be launched in 2027.
The robot is reportedly nicknamed ‘Pixar Lamp,’ paying homage to the mascot of Pixar Animation Studios. This desktop robot is designed to serve as a virtual companion, featuring a rotating screen mounted on a robotic arm that can track users and engage in physical interaction.
As a personalised smart assistant, the robot will be equipped with a new version of the Siri voice assistant, integrating Apple's AI technology to support video calls, facial recognition, and conversational interruptions.
Apple's exploration of the robotics field is one of the ways the company is seeking to create new revenue streams. In the long term, Apple will explore more types of robots, such as mobile robots and industrial robots, to expand application scenarios.
Gary Marcus, an AI expert and emeritus professor of psychology and neuroscience at New York University, stated: ‘Apple has long been skilled at integrating hardware and software, as well as human-machine interfaces. Personally, I do not believe that reliable humanoid home robots are within reach, but if I were to purchase a humanoid robot for my home, I would hope it prioritises privacy, reliability, elegance, safety, and thoughtful design like Apple does.’
Apple's AI initiatives extend beyond robots to include desktop robots, smart speakers, and home cameras. Apple CEO Tim Cook emphasised that the company must lead in AI and hinted at upcoming new products.
Apple's robotics project remains in its early exploratory phase, with no clear timeline for mass production or specific product launches. While Apple has made strides in AI, progress on its robotics initiatives will take time to develop.
In February this year, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo stated that Apple is exploring both humanoid and non-humanoid robots for its future smart home ecosystem, with these products still in the early concept validation phase. Cook recently also stated that Apple needs to ‘win in the field of artificial intelligence’ and described the company's product line as ‘remarkable.’
The strategic significance of Apple's robotics initiative lies in three key areas: first, extending its AI strategy by expanding artificial intelligence from software to hardware devices to enhance competitiveness in the smart home market; second, innovating user experience by offering more intelligent and personalised services through robotics technology, such as virtual companions and home command centres; and third, integrating the ecosystem by seamlessly connecting with existing products like the iPhone, iPad, and HomePod to build a comprehensive smart home ecosystem.
