Renesas' clock generators and frequency synthesizers are both based on PLL clocks, thus enabling the generation of one or more clock signals in a single application. Products based on PLL clocks can generate different output frequencies from the same input frequency. Each peripheral device in the system requires a different operating frequency.

Renesas' clock signal generator produces clock output frequencies with strict tolerance limits and supplies them to timing applications. In most cases, they use simple, low-cost fundamental frequency mode quartz crystals or single-ended or differential clocks as reference frequencies and generate low-jitter output clocks from them. Multiple copies of some frequencies can be provided to drive multiple loads. They can also achieve frequency conversion through multiplication or division.
