The MAX16972AGEB can provide extremely high ESD protection and short-circuit protection for internal low-voltage USB data cables and USB power cables, making it ideal for applications such as in-vehicle radios, navigation, connected products, and USB hubs. The MAX16972AGEB device supports high-speed USB (480Mbps) and full-speed USB (12Mbps) operations. Furthermore, the MAX16972AGEB is also integrated with the circuit for fast charging of consumer electronic devices, supporting the Apple method or the high-speed USB host charger port detection protocol, and supporting USB OTG.

The short-circuit protection functions include: short-circuit protection for the battery with HVBUS, HVD+ and HVD- outputs, as well as short-circuit protection for HVBUS with HVD+ and HVD- outputs. The MAX16972AGEB allows for short circuits to battery voltages up to +18V. The short-circuit protection to ground and overcurrent protection at the HVBUS output terminal can effectively protect the internal BUS power supply from the influence of overcurrent faults.

The MAX16972AGEB provides high ESD protection (±15kV air-gap discharge and ±8kV contact discharge) at all output protection pins (HVBUS, HVD+ and HVD-).

The MAX16972AGEB features two 4.0Ω low-on-resistance channels, a high-speed USB switch, and one 31mΩ low-voltage current-limiting BUS switch, and integrates an external high-voltage power switch controller. The BUS switch can start large-capacity loads that do not comply with the USB specification. The MAX16972AGEB also features enable input, fault indication output, an integrated Apple iPhone®/iPad® fast charging terminal resistor, and an integrated host charger port detection circuit, supporting USB 2.0 battery charging specification version 1.2.
