Semiconductor manufacturer ROHM has developed the "KA2008-B07N70A" 8-inch thermal printhead that supports two lithium-ion battery drives (VH = 7.2V).
In recent years, with the development of cross-border e-commerce, the printing demand for invoices and customs labels has increased, and the printing demand for prescriptions and pharmaceutical instructions in hospitals and pharmacies has also been growing. In this context, thermal printers, which do not need ink and toner but also save energy, have regained their favor and their market continues to expand. Especially in the field of logistics and business, because of the importance of portable printers portability and easy maintenance, the demand for this printer is rising. Among them, in the Asian market dominated by China, the demand for A4 thermal printers is growing, and there is a large demand for 8-inch thermal print heads.
On the other hand, the portable A4 printer has a wider print width than small printers such as receipt printers, so it requires a larger capacity battery, which means that large power consumption is an urgent issue. In addition, in order to cover the wider print width of A4 size, it is necessary to use multiple driver ics to control the heating element, the heat will be uneven due to the different wiring lengths of each heating element, so there is a problem that affects the uniformity of print color. In order to solve these problems, ROHM has developed a thermal printhead "KA2008-B07N70A" for portable A4 printers, which achieves both high print quality and low power consumption.
The new product supports printers of A4 size (210mm wide), and its longitudinal width has been narrowed from the previous 14mm to the industry-leading 11.67mm, narrowing by about 16%, helping to further save the overall space of the printer. By optimizing the heating body structure and improving the driver IC and cabling layout, the 7.2V drive is realized, and the applied energy required for printing is reduced by about 66% compared to the previous 12V drive (condition: print speed 50 mm/s). In addition, by adjusting the individual wiring of the heating body, the heat generated by it is more uniform, so that the print quality is more stable, even under the printing speed conditions of up to 100 mm/s, it can achieve clear print quality at 203 dpi resolution.
Not only that, the new product also supports two thermal printing methods, thermal and thermal transfer printing, supporting a variety of printing purposes. Its structural design reduces the effects of expansion and contraction caused by temperature changes, and also improves mechanical strength and durability, helping to improve the durability of the A4 printer for the main target application.
Thermal printouts are typically used with connectors and heat sinks, but new products can be offered in the form of a single ceramic substrate, helping to increase printer design flexibility. The new product has been temporarily put into mass production in September 2024 at a monthly capacity of 5,000 (sample price: 2,200 yen/piece, excluding tax).
ROHM plans to develop a 300 dpi resolution for portable A4 printers in spring 2025. In addition, ROHM plans to continue to expand its product lineup in the future, enabling high-speed printing and higher efficiency.
