Diodes Corporation announced the launch of the AL8891Q LED driver, expanding its portfolio of automotive standard compliant products. This synchronous step-down LED driver is simple to use and features high side current measurement to drive up to 2A current over a wide 4.5V to 65V voltage input range, and supports up to 95% duty cycle to drive long LED lamp chains. This device provides a flexible and efficient solution for automotive lighting applications including day running lights (DRL), fog lights, turn signals, brake/stop lights and interior lighting.

The AL8891Q uses Constant-on-Time (COT) control design for simple control loop compensation and Cycle-by-Cycle current limitation. Fast transient response is achieved without external compensation capacitors. The switching frequency of this device can be adjusted in the range of 200kHz to 2.5MHz, helping to improve efficiency or achieve a smaller inductor size and compact form factor. This device uses Spectrum Frequency Modulation to enhance EMI performance, helping to comply with the most stringent CISPR 25 Category 5 standards.

The AL8891Q features two separate pins (PWM dimming and analog dimming) to enhance device functionality. PWM dimming ranges from 0.1kHz to 2kHz for high resolution dimming, while analog dimming is between 0.15V and 2V. The built-in soft start function gently increases the inductance and switching current to minimize possible overvoltages and overcurrents at the output.

The AL8891Q features a fault reporting feature that provides comprehensive protection, including auto-restart overheat shut-off, input and constant current undervoltage lock (UVLO), cycle by cycle current limit, and LED open and short circuit protection to help enhance system durability.

The AL8891Q is available in a heat-enhanced TSOP-16EP package with an operating temperature range of -40°C to +125°C. A standard version of AL8891 is also available for industrial and commercial product applications.
