Jan. 16 (Bloomberg) -- SK Hynix plans to cut NAND flash production by 10 percent in the first half of this year, according to TheElec, which reports that the chipmaker's current NAND flash production capacity is about 300,000 wafers per month.

NAND flash prices have been falling for four consecutive months due to oversupply in the market. Micron was the first to announce that it would cut production last month, while Samsung has been revealed to be adjusting NAND production in its home country of South Korea as well as its Xi'an plant in China, with Japan's Armor expected to make a similar move.


According to DRAMeXchange, the fixed price of general-purpose NAND flash memory (128Gb 16Gx8 MLC) for memory cards and USB devices was US$4.9 in August last year, but has fallen month-on-month to US$2.08 since then.


Analysts believe the price drop could be due to falling demand for smartphones and laptops. By contrast, prices for enterprise SSDs for AI data centres have been relatively stable, but the long-term sustainability of this trend is questionable.
