March 11 - Samsung Foundry, the foundry arm of Samsung Electronics, has expanded its partnership with German power semiconductor giant Infineon, for which it has been producing metal-oxide-silicon field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) since last year, according to various media reports including DigiTimes and The Elec.

Infineon, an international leader in semiconductor industry innovation, provides advanced semiconductor products and complete system solutions for the wired and wireless communications, automotive and industrial electronics, memory, computer security and chip card markets.

The infineon power MOSFET is a metal-oxide-silicon field-effect transistor designed for low-voltage applications, combining high switching speeds with excellent efficiency. This innovative technology is a core component of many applications, including consumer electronics, power supplies, DC-DC converters, motor controllers, radio frequency (RF) applications, transportation technology and automotive electronics.

Samsung Foundry has an industry-leading process node, but is still not strong enough in the area of analogue semiconductors such as power management ICs.

Unlike logic chips, power management ICs are mainly manufactured in conventional nodes at 90nm or higher, as the smaller the size, the lower the performance, according to the report.

According to QY Research, the discrete market for power management ICs was worth $35.28 billion last year and is expected to reach $61.3 billion by 2029, growing at an average annual rate of 8.2 percent. mosfets will have a 35 percent market share in 2022.
