The APDS-9999 is a digital I2C compatible interface RGB and proximity sensor with a VCSEL in a single 6-pin package. The device uses four independent red, green, blue, and IR channels arranged in a specially designed matrix. This allows the device to achieve optimal angular response and accurate RGB spectral response under a variety of light sources, with high Lux accuracy.

The APDS-9999 detects light intensity under a variety of lighting conditions and through a variety of attenuating materials, including dark glass. The device can be configured as an ambient light sensor (ALS) and an RGB sensor. Proximity detection works well from bright sunlight to dark rooms. A microoptical lens added within the module provides efficient transmission and reception of infrared energy, thereby reducing overall power consumption. In addition, the device can enter low-power standby mode, providing very low average power consumption.
