The supply chain has revealed that the 5G price war has allowed MediaTek to breath down its entry-level chip to $18, lower than Qualcomm.

According to reports, the supply chain revealed that the 5G price war has allowed MediaTek to take a bite out of the entry-level chip to $18, lower than Qualcomm. Along with the squeeze on 4G chip space, Qualcomm and MediaTek two major manufacturers have decided not to launch new 4G chips this year.


The report pointed out that China's smartphone demand bottomed out, MediaTek faced rival Qualcomm's price war intensified. Faced with the acceleration of the 5G commercial switch, supply chain news has emerged that MediaTek expects to drop its 5G entry chip to below $20 in the second half of this year, approaching the price of 4G chips, so this year Qualcomm and MediaTek's two major mobile phone chip platforms, although the old chip as usual, but both parties have decided not to launch new 4G chips. In other words, this move may also accelerate the fall of 4G mobile phones.


It was announced late last year that Qualcomm may reduce the price of its mid-range and entry-level Snapdragon mobile processors, including the 400 and 600 series, in 2023.


The sources said the short-term purpose of the price cut would most likely be to reduce inventory, however, industry insiders fear that this could be the start of a price war for mid-range and entry-level handset SoCs. "It is unclear whether Qualcomm's move will trigger a price war. In any case, slowing demand in mid-range and entry-level handset markets and general price sensitivity increase the likelihood that future handset brands will push Qualcomm and MediaTek to cut prices." The source said.
