The target of building 2 million new 5G base stations this year has been exceeded ahead of schedule, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the three major operators.

According to the Director of the 5G Innovation Centre of the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, 5G network construction this year has been overachieved, with more than 2.2 million 5G base stations nationwide by the end of September, accounting for more than 60% of the world's 5G base stations. The number of 5G users in our country has exceeded 500 million and now accounts for more than 30% of the overall user penetration rate.

Experts pointed out that China's 5G network construction is still at the scale construction stage, and although the world's largest network has been built, further improvements are still needed in the breadth and depth of coverage. China will continue to adhere to the principle of moderately advanced 5G network construction to achieve the combination of construction and use.

According to a report released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, China's communications capacity is steadily improving. By the end of September, the total number of mobile base stations in China reached 10.72 million, a net increase of 754,000 over the end of the previous year. Among them, the total number of 5G base stations reached 2.22 million, a net increase of 795,000 over the end of the previous year, accounting for 20.7% of the total number of mobile base stations and an increase of 6.4 percentage points over the end of the previous year.
