17 October. Swedish telecoms equipment maker Ericsson said on Monday it had signed a long-term 5G strategic standalone (SA) network deployment agreement with Reliance Jio Infocomm in India.
This is the first collaboration between Jio and Ericsson for the deployment of radio access networks in the country. The telecoms market leader has worked with Samsung in South Korea to build a 4G network.
Ericsson said it will deploy its 5G radio access network (RAN) products and solutions, as well as its E-band microwave mobile transmission solutions, for Jio's fifth-generation network.
In addition to Ericsson, Nokia and Samsung, Jio is also said to be working with US network equipment manufacturer Cisco on its 5G network.
The telco has already launched 'true 5G' test services in four cities - Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Varanasi - and Jio aims to have 5G available in every town, every municipality, every ward, etc. by December 2023.
Ookla analysis shows that Jio's 5G performance depends on the spectrum band it uses, with performance in the C-band (n=78) ranging between 606.53Mbps and a median download speed of 875.26Mbps. A 5G network using the 700MHz band (n=28), on the other hand, offers a median download speed of less than 100Mbps, ranging between 78.69Mbps and 95.13Mbps.
