On October 17, ZTE announced that under the guidance of China Mobile, ZTE has recently completed the functional and performance verification of China Mobile's first 5G R17 RedCap base station and terminal chip, which is an important milestone for the 5G R17 RedCap network and terminal to move towards industrial maturity based on the maturity of the standard, laying a solid foundation for the commercialization of 5G R17 RedCap technology. According to the report, the test is based on the TDD 2.6GHz band and FDD 700MHz band, and the 5G RedCap single-user service rate has met theoretical expectations. On this basis, ZTE also took the lead in completing the verification of VoNR technology in the 5G R17 RedCap network, which is the first time that China has successfully implemented call services in the RedCap test.

It is understood that the test followed the requirements of the China Mobile 5G RedCap Laboratory Test Specification compiled by China Mobile, and used ZTE 5G NR base stations and ZTE 5G R17 RedCap platform test terminals to complete the technical verification of both TDD 2.6GHz and FDD 700MHz bands, including 5G RedCap user identification, independent uplink/downlink initial BWP, independent dedicated BWP, and independent dedicated BWP. The tests included 5G RedCap user identification, independent uplink/downlink initial BWP, independent dedicated BWP, 2.6G/700M heterodyne switching, heterosystem interoperability, peak rate, VoNR and so on. The test results are fully compliant with the 3GPP standard protocol flow and performance expectations, providing a test basis for China Mobile's 5G RedCap new technology evaluation and equipment specification development.


As a key technology and solution for medium and high-speed IoT and industrial IoT scenarios, 5G R17 RedCap can significantly reduce the complexity of terminal RF and baseband, lower terminal power consumption, and thus achieve higher endurance. At the same time, 5G R17 RedCap combines 5G network slicing, 5G LAN, high-precision timing, high reliability and low latency technologies, which have inter-generational advantages over 4G IoT technologies, and provide stronger performance and richer functions while greatly reducing costs, which is conducive to the wider application of modules and terminal devices in vertical industries. In the future, 5G R17 RedCap can be mainly applied to wearable devices, industrial IoT and video applications to meet the needs of vertical industries such as smart logistics, smart power, smart inspection and smart manufacturing.
