Nokia to lead second phase of EU 6G flagship project, launching in January next year
The European Commission announces the creation of Hexa-X-II, the second phase of the European 6G flagship programme.
On 11 October, the European Commission announced the creation of Hexa-X-II, the second phase of the European 6G flagship project programme. Nokia will be the project lead for Hexa-X-II, having previously led the first Hexa-X project, which focused on a common vision and possible use cases and technology enablers for European 6G, while Hexa-X-II will create a pre-standardised platform and overall system view.
Nokia's leadership of Hexa-X and Hexa-X-II demonstrates its commitment to European collaboration as it will work with key ecosystem players to shape the future of communications.
Nokia recently announced that it will lead the Hexa-X-II project, a new phase that will expand the list of Hexa-X partners to 44 organisations tasked with creating pre-standardised platforms and system views that will form the basis of many inputs for future 6G standardisation.
The Hexa-X-II project has received funding from the European Commission as part of the Smart Networks and Services Joint Project (SNS-JU) call. This is an important step in bringing together key industry stakeholders in Europe. Hexa-X and Hexa-X-II aim to make Europe a leader in 6G.
Hexa-X-II represents the entire value chain of future connectivity solutions. Its members range from network providers and communication service providers to vertical industries and technology providers, as well as Europe's most renowned communication research institutes.
Supported by Hexa-X innovations, the Hexa-X-II Alliance will strive to overcome the following challenges.
• Sustainability: Hexa-X-II will research technologies that will help achieve a zero carbon footprint and limit energy and material consumption.
• Inclusiveness: Hexa-X-II aims to provide connectivity to people in developing countries/regions as well as to poor members of developed societies.
• Trustworthiness: Hexa-X-II will ensure data transparency, security and privacy as well as network robustness.
As part of the announcement, Ericsson acted as technical manager for Hexa-X-II. Orange, TIM SpA, University of Dresden, University of Oulu, IMEC and Atos will help coordinate various work packages such as radio evolution and innovation, future devices and flexible infrastructure, intelligent network management and value, as well as requirements and ecosystems.
In addition to Hexa-X-II and Hexa-X, Nokia is said to be leading the German 6G Lighthouse project 6G-ANNA and is playing a key role in establishing the Horizon Europe Smart Networks and Services joint venture.
The Hexa-X-II project aims to start work on 1 January 2023 and is planned to last two and a half years.
