On October 11, Reuters previously reported that the Indian government would pressure Apple, Samsung and other handset makers to prioritise the rollout of system upgrades to support the country's 5G network. And the latest news suggests that Apple will complete this task within the year.


According to ET News, a source has revealed that Apple will add 5G support for Indian carriers via a software update for the iPhone as early as December.

Apple and Indian carrier Airtel will meet this week to discuss why the iPhone is not compatible with India's 5G network, the source said. Apple has reportedly tested 5G support on iPhones in Mumbai and New Delhi in India, citing a source who said that an official update could roll out support in December.


India officially launched 5G services on October 1, with the first batch covering only some major cities and a full rollout expected by 2024, and Indian telecoms operators Airtel and Jio are expanding their 5G networks across the country. Apple's iPhone models, including the latest iPhone 14, and many of Samsung's flagship phones do not currently support 5G networks in India.
