Overview:
Broadcom® BCM85821 is the industry's highest performing and lowest power 800GbE PAM-4 PHY transceiver, capable of driving four-channel 226-Gb/s PAM-4 at 113 Gbaud. Both 400GB DR1.2 and 1.6GB DR4.2 are supported.
The BCM85821 utilizes the market-leading 5-nanometer PAM-4 PHY transceiver technology platform, which has been validated by the BCM85812, to provide a pathway to accelerate the availability of 1.6T OSFP-XD optical modules. Advanced Broadcom DSP technology and equalization technology compensate for light damage while maintaining the world's lowest-power pluggable optical modules and co-packaged optical solutions, enabling deployments of 51.2-Tb/s and higher density switched ASics.
The BCM85821 integrates a highly differentiated feature set, including market-leading FEC feature options and client-side switch ASIC SerDes interoperability, providing an unmatched competitive advantage to the market.
In 800GbE mode, the BCM85821 converts the client's eight channels of 106 Gb/s to four channels of 226 Gb/s to drive the next generation of high-density optical PAM-4 links within the OSFP-XD form factor module.
The client of the BCM85821 also features cross bars for easy wiring in the PCB. On-chip clock synthesis is done with a low-cost 312.5 MHz or 625 MHz reference clock via a high-frequency, low-jitter phase-locking loop
Functional characteristics
Single-chip 4 x 200G PAM-4 PHY drives 800GbE through optical fibers
Client: 8 x 106G PAM-4
Line side: 4 × 226G PAM-4 (128,120 interior code with 2-bit fill)
Support forward gear box, backward compatible with 400G optical module
Client: 8 x 53G PAM-4
Line side: 4 x 106G PAM-4
Supports client crossbar system and can be flexibly routed to various standards
Supports 100G repeater mode
Supports FEC monitoring in repeater mode with secondary sampling feature to reduce power consumption
Supports FEC termination and generation
Support differential line end output
Both the line end (10 taps) and the client end (7 taps) support TX FIR
The client interface complies with:
The IEEE 802.3ck C2C (Appendix 135F) specification supports medium-range channels
The IEEE 802.3ck C2M (Appendix 135G) specification supports the chip-to-module channel
The CEI-112G-VSR/MR Specification supports both short range (VSR) and medium range (MR) channels
IEEE 802.3cd compliant KP4 and end-to-end FEC bypass operation: -800g /400G/200G/100G KP4 FECC
The client provides link training support
Loop between the line end and the client
5nm CMOS design with lowest power consumption
Integrated AVS regulator
