9 July 2025, Beijing, China – Renesas Electronics, a global provider of semiconductor solutions, today announced the launch of its RA2T1 microcontroller (MCU) product family based on the Arm® Cortex®-M23 processor. This series is optimised for motor control systems and specifically designed for single-motor applications such as fans, power tools, vacuum cleaners, refrigerators, printers, and hair dryers.

Features Optimised for Motor Control


The new RA2T1 products incorporate several design enhancements to improve motor control functionality, particularly for single-motor systems. One of its key features is a 3-channel S&H (sample-and-hold) function, enabling simultaneous detection of the three-phase current values of a brushless DC (BLDC) motor. Compared to sequential measurement methods, this approach enhances control accuracy. The RA2T1 MCU also provides a timer with complementary pulse width modulation (PWM) functionality, enabling automatic insertion of dead time and generation of asymmetric PWM. This feature, optimised for inverter drives, facilitates the implementation of control algorithms.


The RA2T1 product integrates safety features critical to motor control applications, including port output enable functionality and high-speed comparators. When overcurrent is detected, these two features work together to quickly shut down the PWM output. The shutdown state can be configured according to inverter specifications.

In addition to multiple RA MCU product families, Renesas also offers motor control-specific devices in its 32-bit RX product family, 16-bit RL78 MCUs, and 64-bit RZ MPU product lines.

Key features of the RA2T1 MCU product family:  

Core: 64MHz Arm® Cortex®-M23  

Memory: 64KB flash, 8KB SRAM, 2KB data flash  

Analogue peripherals: 12-bit ADC (with 3-channel sample-and-hold), temperature sensor, internal reference voltage, 2-channel high-speed comparator  

System: High, medium, and low-speed on-chip oscillators; clock output; power-on reset; voltage detection; data transfer, event linking, and interrupt controller; low-power mode  

Security features: PWM forced shutdown, SRAM parity error detection, ADC self-diagnosis, clock frequency accuracy measurement, illegal memory access detection  

Operating temperature range: Ta = -40°C to 125°C  

Operating voltage: 1.6V to 5.5V

Package: 48LQFP, 32-LQFP, 48-QFN, 32-QFN, 24-QFN (4mm x 4mm)


The new RA2T1 product family of MCUs is supported by Renesas' Flexible Software Package (FSP). FSP provides all the necessary infrastructure software, including multiple RTOS, BSP, peripheral drivers, middleware, connectivity, networking, and security stacks, as well as reference software for building complex AI, motor control, and cloud solutions, thereby accelerating application development. It allows customers to integrate their existing code and selected RTOS with FSP, providing full flexibility for application development. With FSP, existing designs can be easily migrated to other RA series products.


Successful Product Portfolio

Renesas combines its new RA2T1 MCU product family with numerous compatible components in its product portfolio to create a wide range of ‘successful product portfolios,’ including portable electric tools, smart BLDC ceiling fans, wireless vacuum cleaners, and wireless leaf blowers. The ‘successful product portfolio’ is based on mutually compatible and seamlessly collaborating products with a technically validated system architecture, delivering optimised low-risk designs to accelerate time-to-market. Renesas has now launched over 400 ‘successful product portfolios’ based on various products in its product lineup, enabling customers to accelerate the design process and bring products to market faster.


Availability Information

The RA2T1 product family MCUs and FSP software are now available. The new MCUs are supported by Renesas' flexible motor control development kit and Renesas Motor Workbench development tools, the former enabling convenient evaluation of permanent magnet synchronous motor (brushless DC motor) control.
