Overview

The MAX14001AAP is an isolated, single-channel analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with a programmable voltage comparator and surge current control, optimized for configurable binary input applications. The MAX14001AAP offers 3.75kVRMS integrated isolation on the binary input side (field side) and the comparator output /SPI side (logic side). Integrated, isolated, DC-DC converters power all field-side circuits, so field-side diagnostics can be performed even without input signals. The 20-pin SSOP package offers a creepage distance and clearance of 5.5mm, with a Class II CTI rating.


The MAX14001AAP continuously digitizes the input voltage on the field side of the isolation barrier and sends the data to the logic side of the device through the isolation barrier. Then, the input voltage can be compared with the programmable threshold. If the input voltage is higher than the upper limit or lower than the lower limit, the output pin of the binary comparator is at a high level. When filtering is prohibited, the response time of the comparator to input changes is less than 150μs. When enabling filtering, the comparator adopts the moving average of the latest 2, 4 or 8 ADC readings. Both filtered and unfiltered ADC readings are provided through the 5MHz SPI port, which is also used to set comparator thresholds and other device configurations.


The MAX14001AAP controls the current of the binary input through an external, high-voltage FET. This current cleans the relay contacts and attenuates the input noise. The surge comparator that monitors the ADC reading triggers the surge current or wetting pulse. The surge trigger threshold, current amplitude and current duration are all programmable in the MAX14001AAP, but they are fixed values in the MAX14002. When the high-voltage FET does not provide inrush current, switch to bias voltage mode. The bias mode provides a small current load on the binary input to attenuate the capacitive coupling noise. In the MAX14001AAP, the bias current can be programmed within the range of 50μA to 3.75mA. This allows for the best balance between noise attenuation and power consumption.
