To help engineers minimize design cost and complexity in the face of stringent safety requirements, Microchip Technology Inc. AVR SD series MCU (MCU) is officially launched. Designed for applications requiring high reliability verification with integrated functional safety mechanisms and priced at less than $1, this family of microcontrollers is the first entry-level microcontroller to meet automotive Safety Integrity Level C (ASIL C) and Safety Integrity Level 2 (SIL 2) requirements in this price segment. This series of microcontroller functional safety management system has passed the certification of TuV Rheinland, which further enhances the safety performance.

The AVR SD series of microcontrollers has several hardware safety features, including a dual-core lockstep CPU, a dual-mode digital-to-analog converter (ADC), full-memory error correction code (ECC), a dedicated error control module, error injection mechanism, and voltage and clock monitors. These features significantly reduce fault detection time and software complexity, supporting fault detection time Interval (FDTI) goals as low as 1 millisecond, effectively preventing hazardous conditions and improving system reliability.


Used in conjunction with Microchip's security framework software, this family of microcontrollers autonomously manages functional safety diagnostics, detects and handles errors, and triggers a security state when necessary. This series of microcontrollers can be used as the main processor to achieve key functions such as detecting thermal runaway or monitoring sensor data such as rotation position with minimal power consumption. It is also an excellent candidate for coprocessors in complex systems, mirroring or offloading safety-critical functions for applications with high safety integrity levels up to ASIL D and SIL 3.

AVR SD series microcontrollers comply with ISO 26262 (automotive) and IEC 61508 (industrial) international safety standards and are suitable for aerospace and defense, industrial automation, automotive and medical fields.
