STMicroelectronics recently announced that the ST87M01 NB-IoT geo-location module, which adds additional functionality, has now completed all test approvals for Deutsche Telekom (DT) access.


The ST87M01 module integrates network connectivity and geolocation functionality in a small package, is certified to the IoT connectivity standard NB-IoT version 15, is compliant with regional standards such as 3GPP and the European Union's Radio Equipment Directive (RED), and has a built-in GSMA-compliant embedded SIM card with a security unit and GNSS satellite receiver, where the embedded SIM card is optional. Following a recent update to the product, the ST87M01 now adds Wi-Fi positioning, which improves the reliability and accuracy of geo-location within environments where GNSS satellite signals are poor, such as indoor and high-density urban areas.


With the integration of ST's ST4SIM-300 embedded SIM card, the ST87M01 module is also suitable for remote SIM turn-up scenarios. Remote SIM turn-up supports the GSMA SGP.32 standard, allowing mobile network users to switch networks without having to replace the physical SIM card. Successfully passing the Deutsche Telekom certification test is the latest in a series of chip function demonstration events conducted by STMicroelectronics with a number of mobile network operators, proving that the ST87M01 meets the stringent requirements of the technical standard for network performance and efficiency.


Domenico Arrigo, general manager of ST's dedicated products division, said: ‘The Deutsche Telekom network license is an important feature that differentiates our NB-IoT geolocation module from the competition. The ST87M01 module has also been certified by the Global Certification Forum (GCF), an interoperability certification organisation for mobile and IoT products.


ST87M01 at Mobile World Congress and Embedded World 2025


ST is showcasing the ST87M01 module and its new features at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona and Embedded World Congress in Nuremberg.


Demonstrating the module's strong potential for applications in the Internet of Things (IoT), ST is focusing on the Remote SIM Provisioning (RSP) feature that supports the GSMA's SGP.32 specification, which has been specifically developed to meet the market demand for large-scale deployment of IoT devices. The product demo will show the audience how device owners can seamlessly and securely configure and activate new Mobile Network Operator (MNO) profiles using an intuitive dashboard application. The Easy Network Switching feature brings great convenience to different IoT applications, giving users the flexibility to choose a mobile network operator and switch networks without having to replace the physical SIM card at the end device.


In addition, a demonstration of the latest Wi-Fi positioning feature showed the audience how the ST87M01 can accurately determine its own location based on its distance from a registered Wi-Fi access point.Wi-Fi positioning compares unique identifiers with a database of access points to determine geographic location with an accuracy comparable to GNSS. In environments where GNSS signals are blind, such as factories or offices, shopping centres, indoor car parks or three-dimensional roads, Wi-Fi positioning provides continuous and accurate geolocation.
