STMicroelectronics has announced the next generation of STM32 power-efficient short-range wireless microcontrollers (MCUs) that simplify connecting consumer electronics and industrial devices to the Internet of Things.
The new family of STM32WBA6 microcontrollers is intended for use in IoT smart devices such as wearable medical devices, health monitors, animal collars, electronic locks, remote weather prediction sensors and more. The new family of wireless microcontrollers integrates larger capacity memory and more digital system interfaces while maintaining energy efficiency to handle richer functionality in emerging product designs.
The STM32WBA6 MCUs also have built-in security assets that can be certified to SESIP3 and PSA Level 3, such as cryptographic algorithm accelerators, TrustZone® isolation, random number generators, and product lifecycle management, which will help customers to meet the upcoming requirements of the RED and CRA regulations.

The wireless subsystem of the new family of STM32WBA6 microcontrollers supports Bluetooth, Zigbee, Thread, Matter and other network protocols that operate in the 2.4GHz band and allows devices to communicate using multiple protocols simultaneously. This allows networked systems such as smart home bridges to communicate with the homeowner's mobile app via Bluetooth, while also managing lighting or thermostats via mesh networks such as Zigbee.The STM32WBA6 family is also available as a single-protocol product to meet the needs of customers who value simplicity and cost-effectiveness.

Technical Notes:
By integrating a processor core, peripheral interfaces and wireless subsystems, the STM32WBA6 MCU helps product developers simplify new designs, reduce product size and save on electronic bill of materials costs. The new series of MCUs more than doubles the on-chip Flash and RAM capacity compared to the previous STM32WBA5 series, providing ample storage for application code and data.
The new STM32WBA6 family of MCUs features larger memory with up to 2MB of on-chip Flash and up to 512KB of RAM to support more complex applications.
The already rich set of digital peripheral interfaces now includes a USB high-speed interface and more digital interfaces including three SPI ports, four I2C ports, three USARTs and an LPUART.
The STM32WBA6 family supports wireless communication capabilities with multiple protocols running simultaneously, making it ideal for application designs with the Matter protocol running on top of other protocols. As a component of the STM32Cube ecosystem, the X-CUBE-MATTER software package integrates the Matter SDK tool with sample application code, which reduces the difficulty of application development.
The wireless subsystem improves reception performance with a reception sensitivity of -100dBm for a more reliable network connection over the maximum communication distance.
The STM32WBA6 family features a power-efficient Arm® Cortex®-M33 core with a built-in floating-point unit and DSP extended instruction set at up to 100MHz.
Both the STM32WBA5 and STM32WBA6 families support the latest EU Radio Equipment Directive (RED) cybersecurity regulations, and the SESIP3 certification target will greatly simplify the compliance process for customer devices.
Package options range from 7mm x 7mm UFQFPN48 to 6mm x 6mm UFBGA121 (121-pin).
There is also a very thin wafer-level chip-scale package, the WLCSP88, measuring only 3.78 mm x 3.46 mm.
