Recently, according to a Reuters report, they interviewed Singapore-based businessman Kelvin Pang, who recently bought 62,000 MCU chips and stored them in a warehouse in Hong Kong. Originally, the MCU chips were bought by the original buyers at a price of $23.8 (about 160 yuan) each. Now, he is going to sell these MCU chips in Shenzhen at a price of $375 (about 2,531 yuan) each.
Although Kelvin Pang is unwilling to disclose the takeover price, compared with the purchase price of the original buyer, the "value" of these MCU chips has skyrocketed by 15 times after changing hands twice. Right now, there are still many "core diggers" like Kelvin Pang, and they all focus on the Chinese market.
In fact, whether the chip price rises mainly depends on the degree of shortage and the field of application. Industrial control, automotive, server and other application chips are in short supply. "Chopping orders" occurs more in the field of consumer electronics, especially graphics cards, smartphones and other products, and gradually spread from consumer electronics terminals to chip manufacturers.
According to reports, industry insiders revealed that the price of ST’s chips fell by 80%. In 8 months, the L9369-TR chip fell from a high of 3,500 yuan to 671 yuan, a price reduction of over 80.8%.
However, the original chip manufacturers do not seem to be affected, and they have proposed price increases. Leading the pack is Intel, which said it plans to raise prices by 10% to 20% this fall on flagship products such as servers and PC processors, as well as a range of other products, including WiFi and other connectivity chips.
Immediately afterwards, Marvell also reported that on August 1, it will officially increase by 7-8% according to customers and products in short supply.
Qualcomm also said that the price of new contracts will increase by 4%, and the price of orders that need to be delivered from January 2023 will increase by nearly 10%. This could directly affect the selling price of most Android phones.
And just yesterday, according to Taiwan media reports, sources said that the supply of wireless network chips continues to be lower than the demand for 5G and Wi-Fi 6 equipment, and Broadcom has notified customers that the price of its network communication chips will increase by 6% from January 2023. to 8%.
The sources pointed out that despite the sluggish demand in consumer electronics applications, analog IC suppliers are still benefiting from strong demand in automotive electronics and industrial controls. TI has informed customers that the price of certain ICs, such as server ICs, will increase by about 10% in the third quarter of 2022.
The reason is that most of the chips have a relatively large degree of relief, but there is still a small shortage of chips, especially chips in the high-end field with weak replacement capabilities.
