NVIDIA recently introduced NVIDIA Spectrum-X and NVIDIA Quantum-X silicon optical network switches that enable AI factories to connect millions of Gpus across regions while dramatically reducing energy consumption and operating costs. NVIDIA has enabled the convergence of electronic circuits and optical communications on a large-scale platform.
As AI factories grow to unprecedented scale, networks must evolve to keep pace. NVIDIA silicon optical switches are the world's leading networking solutions. They innovatively integrate optical devices, reduce the number of lasers by four times, improve energy efficiency to 3.5 times, signal integrity to 63 times, large-scale networking reliability to 10 times, and deployment speed to 1.3 times compared to traditional methods.
"The AI factory is a new type of hyperscale data center that will require an entirely new network infrastructure to keep pace," said Jen-Hsun Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA. "By integrating silicon light directly into switches, NVIDIA breaks the old limits of hyperscale and enterprise networking, opening the door to million-GPU AI factories."
NVIDIA silicon optical network switches are used on the NVIDIA Spectrum-X Photonics Ethernet platform and the NVIDIA Quantum-X Photonics InfiniBand platform.
Compared to traditional Ethernet, the Spectrum-X Ethernet network platform delivers superior performance and 1.6 times the bandwidth density of multi-tenant, hyperscale AI factories, including today's largest supercomputers in the world.
NVIDIA Spectral-X Photonics switches are available in a variety of configurations, including 128 800 Gb/s ports or 512 200 Gb/s ports for a total bandwidth of 100 Tb/s. And 512 800 Gb/s or 2,048 200 Gb/s ports for a total throughput of 400 Tb/s.
The NVIDIA Quantum-X Photonics switch offers 144 800Gb/s InfiniBand ports based on 200Gb/s SerDes and uses a liquid-cooled design for efficient heat dissipation of on-board silicon optical devices. The NVIDIA Quantum-X Photonics switch AI computing network is twice as fast and five times as scalable as the previous generation.
Network ecosystem
NVIDIA's silicon optics ecosystem partners include TSMC, Browave, Coherent, Corning Incorporated, Fabrinet, Foxconn, Lumentum, SENKO, SPIL, Sumitomo Electric Industries and TFC Communication.
"The new generation of AI factories needs high efficiency and low maintenance costs to reach the scale required for the new generation of workloads," said TSMC Chairman and CEO Zhe Jia Wei. "TSMC's silicon optics solution combines the strengths of our advanced chip processes and TSMC-SOIC 3D chip packaging to help NVIDIA leverage the full capabilities of the AI factory, helping the AI factory scale to 1 million Gpus and beyond, pushing the boundaries of AI."
NVIDIA photonics technology will drive massive growth in a new generation of advanced AI factories, and will be driven by plugable optical module technology from industry leaders such as Coherent, Eoptolink, Fabrinet and Innolight.
Supply information
The NVIDIA Quantum-X Photonics InfiniBand switch is expected to be available later this year, and in 2026, leading infrastructure and systems vendors will launch NVIDIA Spectrum-X Photonics Ethernet switches.
