As automakers create smart cabins by integrating large-size displays and emerging technologies such as OLED (organic light-emitting diodes) and microleds, seeking to combine functionality with brand identity, achieving reliable capacitive touch with thinner stacks and more touch electrodes is a key challenge. To this end, Microchip Technology Inc. introduced the ATMXT3072M1 and ATMXT2496M1 touch screen controller families to provide reliable solutions for automotive human machine interface (HMI) design. The single-chip touchscreen controllers feature up to 112 reconfigurable touch channels (or 162 equivalent touch channels in ultra wide mode) and support large sizes, curved surfaces and various shapes of touch screens up to 20 inches in 16:9 format and 34 inches in 7:1 format.

Large-size thin displays, such as On-cell OLeds, have embedded touch electrodes with higher capacitive loads and stronger display noise coupling, which increases the risk of miscontact or missed contact detection. Part of the maXTouch touchscreen controller family, the new device uses Microchip's proprietary Smart Mutual touch acquisition methods and algorithms to improve the touch signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) by up to 15 dB compared to previous generation products.


Patrick Johnson, Microchip's senior vice president of human Interface, said: "The size and appearance of a car's cockpit display can greatly influence buyers' perceptions of the technological advancements in a vehicle, but integrating reliable touch capabilities into advanced displays presents significant challenges. Our ATMXT3072M1 and ATMXT2496M1 touch screen controllers solve these challenges with innovative sensing algorithms for fast and reliable touch performance. This enables automakers to design state-of-the-art, visually stunning and user-friendly interfaces that enhance the driving experience and vehicle safety."


The ATMXT3072M1 and ATMXT2496M1 controllers are designed to comply with ASIL-A and B standards and are based on Microchip's ISO26262 functional safety management system, which has been certified by TuV Rheinland. In addition, Failure Mode, Impact and Diagnostic Analysis (FMEDA) and safety manuals are available to help customers obtain certification of system touch capabilities more efficiently and cost-effectively. The firmware of the touch controller can be upgraded through the vehicle's main computer system and verified using the integrated firmware verification feature with the SHA-512 cryptographic hash function. This network security feature enables reliable over-the-air (OTA) updates, compliant with ISO 21434:2021.


To limit the amount of time the eye is off the road and promote safer driving, the EuroNCAP 2026 test may encourage manufacturers to use separate physical controls for basic functions. Microchip's Knob-on-Display™ (KoD™) technology adds intuitive physical knobs to touch screens, preserving the stylish look of modern automotive displays while improving safety. In addition, implementing haptic feedback on touch screens is also a recognized way to reduce driver distraction. The new maXTouch M1 touchscreen controller has dedicated features such as a shape event trigger combined with automatic mode Pulse width modulation (PWM) for ultra-low latency haptic control. This innovative technology transfers the decision making and generation of haptic waveforms from the main application host processor to the touch screen controller.
