Baidu will reportedly launch its next-generation AI model in the second half of 2025, people familiar with the matter have revealed. The news comes on the heels of claims that Ernie 5.0 will feature multi-modal capabilities, enabling it to process and convert different formats, including text, video, images and audio.
The release of the model comes at a time of increasing competition in China's AI space, particularly from startup DeepSeek, which made a name for itself by launching an inference model that matches the performance of OpenAI's GPT at a much lower cost.
Speaking at the World Government Summit, Baidu founder Robin Li recently said that while DeepSeek challenges the cost efficiency of large-scale AI models, it still needs to invest in data centres and cloud infrastructure.
Robin Li said, ‘Investment in cloud infrastructure is still very necessary, in order to come up with models that are smarter than anyone else, you have to use more computation.’
At the summit, Robin Li admitted that DeepSeek's sudden appearance proved the unpredictability of innovation, ‘You simply don't know when and where it's coming from, and U.S. chip sanctions are forcing Chinese companies to innovate within computational constraints.’ He said.
