The shortage of power management chips is serious

Major overseas IDM manufacturers also pointed out that the existing production capacity cannot meet the needs of server customers, especially the shortage of PMICs is serious, and there should be no loose production capacity in 2022 alone.

According to Taiwan Electronic Times, there has been noise in the server market recently, and it is believed that large data center customers have begun to reduce capital expenditures, which will drag down the operating performance in 2022.

In this regard, IC design industry generally said that they have not seen such a situation. Overseas IDM manufacturers even pointed out that the existing production capacity cannot meet the needs of server customers, especially the shortage of PMICs is serious. Rather than worrying about the decline in demand, PMIC industry players are more worried about not having enough Capacity to keep up with this wave of rising business opportunities.

There have been many news of loose chip production capacity in the market. For this, Taiwan-based power management chip (PMIC) manufacturers believe that there should be no loose production capacity in 2022 alone, but the 8-inch production capacity of second- and third-tier factories in 2023 will be limited. Opportunity to free up more space.

In addition to other factors such as the gradual transfer of other 8-inch chip products to the higher-end 12-inch process, or the decline in terminal demand, major customers such as Qualcomm, MediaTek, and Apple have to give up the previously obtained 8-inch after entering the 12-inch. inch capacity, is the key reason.

Power management chip (PMIC) is the most widely used category of semiconductor chips, which can be used in household appliances, mobile phones and tablets, charging and adapters, smart meters, lighting, communication equipment and other fields.

As previously reported, PMIC is one of the most scarce chip categories other than MCU. And PMIC is an important part of analog IC, accounting for over 40% of analog chips. As of the end of March this year, the delivery period of international semiconductor manufacturers has reached as high as 20-24 weeks, and the delivery period of individual manufacturers has reached as high as 40-52 weeks. In order to squeeze out the bubble of Overbooking, original manufacturers such as NXP and Microchip have extended the NCNR (non-cancellable order, non-returnable) regulation to 12 months at the beginning of the year.

Previously, automakers such as Toyota and Volkswagen had to reduce production due to chip shortages; game consoles were also victims of PMIC shortages. Taking the PS5 as an example, its sales were lower than the PS4 sales in the same period from April to June this year; Nintendo also said that the shortage of chips caused the production of the Switch to be insufficient to meet customer demand.

It is understood that Toshiba Semiconductor, a well-known Japanese chip manufacturer, does not believe that the current demand will disappear as the epidemic eases, and it is optimistic that the demand for PMIC will still be in a growth trend in the future.
