Feb. 10 -- Apple is investing more in robotics, recently posting more job openings for related roles, in hopes of bringing a smarter experience to its products, according to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman's Power On newsletter published Sunday. The team is currently working on smart home devices with basic personality traits.
The robotics team is led by Apple's vice president of technology, Kevin Lynch. Last August, it was revealed that Apple had brought in a group of experts from the Israel Institute of Technology. Lynch has led a number of key projects, from the ultimately aborted ‘Apple Car’ project to the Apple Watch's health-monitoring capabilities, and his influence has been felt in a number of areas.
Currently, Apple is still looking for robotics engineers, suggesting that its home robotics programme is accelerating. Apple recently posted a job opening for an iOS robotics engineer, which will go live as early as 23 January.
Apple is trying to build home devices that can actively approach the user, rather than having the user adapt to the device's position. It is reported that the team is developing at least two robotic products: a mobile device that can intelligently follow the user, and a ‘smart desk lamp’, whose design may be inspired by Pixar's mascot Luxo Junior (IT home note: ‘naughty jumping lamp’). ).
At the same time, Apple is also rumoured to be developing a ‘smart home hub’ device, which can manage home security, temperature control and other systems, such devices and accessories may be introduced as early as this year.
