In aerospace and defense applications with strict limits on size, weight, and power consumption (SWaP), developers need ultra-clean timing devices. The Chat-scale atomic clock (CSAC) is an important benchmark for these systems, providing the precise and stable timing necessary in situations where conventional atomic clocks are too bulky or power consuming and where other satellite benchmarks may be compromised. Microchip Technology Inc. today announced the launch of the second generation of low-noise chip-scale atomic Clock (LN-CSAC), model SA65-LN, with a lower profile height and wider operating temperature range to achieve low phase noise and atomic clock stability under harsh conditions.

Microchip developed its own vacuum Micro Crystal oscillator (EMXO) technology and integrated it into the CSAC, reducing the SA65-LN model profile height to less than ½ inch while maintaining power consumption of < 295 mW. With its small size, low power consumption and high accuracy, the new design is the best choice for aerospace and defense mission-critical applications such as mobile radar, detachable radios, detachable improvised explosive device jamming systems, as well as autonomous sensor networks and unmanned vehicle applications. The new LN-CSAC operates over a wider temperature range (-40°C to +80°C), maintaining frequency and phase stability under extreme conditions for increased reliability.


Randy Brudzinski, Microchip's vice president of Frequency and Time Systems, said: "Our next-generation LN-CSAC provides superior stability and accuracy in an extremely compact form factor and is a major step forward in frequency technology. "This device enables customers to achieve superior signal clarity and atomic-level accuracy, while also reducing design complexity and power consumption."


The LN-CSAC combines the benefits of a crystal oscillator and an atomic clock in a single compact device. EMXO has low phase noise < -120 dBc/Hz at 10 Hz and Allen Deviation (ADEV) stability < 1E-11 over an average time of 1 second. The initial accuracy of the atomic clock is ±0.5 ppb, the low-frequency drift performance is < 0.9 ppb/ month, and the maximum error due to temperature is < ±0.3 ppb. The LN-CSAC saves board space, design time, and overall power consumption compared to designs using two oscillators.


LN-CSAC's crystal signal purity and low phase noise ensure high-quality signal integrity, which is critical for mixing. Atomic-level accuracy allows for longer calibration intervals, which helps extend mission duration and helps reduce maintenance requirements.
