The advantages of Universal Serial Bus (USB) interfaces in embedded design include compatibility with various devices, simplified communication protocols, field update capabilities, and power supply capabilities. To help easily integrate this functionality into embedded systems, Microchip Technology Inc. Introduced AVR DU series microcontroller. As the next generation of Microchip 8-bit MCUS with integrated USB connectivity, the AVR DU series is designed to deliver stronger security features and higher power output than previous versions.

"USB is the standard communication protocol and power output scheme for electronic devices," said Greg Robinson, Microchip's vice president of 8-bit MCU business unit. Microchip's AVR DU family combines the flexibility of our state-of-the-art 8-bit MCUS with the versatility of enhanced power outputs to bring the benefits of USB to a broader range of embedded systems."

The AVR DU MCU supports up to 15W of power from the USB interface, which is rare among other USB microcontrollers in its class. This feature charges USB-C with up to 3A at 5V, making these MCUS a great choice for devices such as power banks and rechargeable toys.

To strengthen its defense against malicious attacks, the AVR DU family uses Microchip's Programming and Debugging Interface Disable (PDID) feature. When enabled, enhanced code protection locks access to programming/debugging interfaces and blocks unauthorized attempts to read, modify, or erase firmware. To enable secure firmware updates, the AVR DU family utilizes "Read as you Write" (RWW) flash memory, combined with a secure boot loader that allows designers to use the USB interface to patch vulnerabilities, address security issues, and add new features without interrupting product operation. This addition to the AVR DU MCU enables continuous field updates, helping to extend the service life of the product.

In addition, the AVR DU series features USB clock recovery and eliminates the need for expensive external crystal oscillators, helping to reduce overall design and bill of materials (BOM) costs. Kern-independent peripherals (CIP) enable designers to integrate major device functions and system management tasks into a compact single-chip solution, saving board space and reducing design effort.

From fitness wearables and home appliances to agricultural and industrial applications, developers of a wide range of embedded designs can benefit from incorporating efficient AVR DU MCUS into their designs. For an online demo of the AVR DU series, visit try.microchip.com.
