As the global economy moves toward recovery in 2024, Nordic Semiconductor is seeing growth in wireless connectivity across multiple industries, particularly in artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things and industrial applications. Reliable wireless solutions are driving the seamless integration of smart home devices, entertainment systems and wearables into everyday life. Meanwhile, connected health is transforming medical monitoring and drug delivery systems. Real-time health tracking and remote patient care rely on secure, low-power devices, making connectivity a key enabler of healthcare innovation.

The industrial IoT space is also undergoing significant change. Automation, asset tracking, infrastructure management and agriculture are increasingly relying on IoT to improve productivity and efficiency. At the same time, machine learning at the edge is becoming a powerful tool for enabling secure real-time data transmission through smarter, more adaptive edge devices.

Comprehensive Ultra-Low Power Wireless Connectivity Solutions

Nordic believes that wireless connectivity solutions are the foundation for these advancements. Our low-power, high-performance hardware and software solutions enable industries to modernise their operations while adapting to future challenges. Today, we are able to achieve outstanding battery efficiency, leading the way in ultra-low power wireless connectivity solutions.

Nordic, the market leader in design wins, has a 41 per cent market share of new FCC design wins in the Bluetooth low power market in Q3 2024 and a 42 per cent market share in the last 12 months, according to data from the Bluetooth SIG. We continue to be the market leader with approximately five times as many design wins as the second largest company. The total number of new low-power Bluetooth designs certified by the FCC in the last 12 months was 1,212, of which 509 were Nordic designs.

However, we don't just offer low power, we also offer high performance processing and computing capabilities that are seamlessly integrated into our solutions at competitive prices.

Nordic takes a holistic approach, supporting our customers beyond just rolling out hardware. We offer a comprehensive suite of development tools, software stacks and ongoing technical support to help our customers bring their products to market efficiently and with minimal technical hurdles.Nordic's commitment to solving customer challenges at both the product and system level has always made it popular with developers.Nordic's portfolio includes Low Power Bluetooth, Cellular IoT (NB-IoT and LTE-M), DECT NR+, Matter, Thread and low-power Wi-Fi, providing customers with the flexibility to choose the best solution for their specific application.Nordic also makes the design of its solutions very easy.

This optimised pre-integration typically shaves hundreds of engineering hours off development efforts, resulting in costly savings and the ability to source separate components (hardware and software) from different manufacturers for seamless collaboration. And, Nordic extends this to other additional standalone components that will be required for any wireless connectivity product.

Nordic intends to introduce strategic new products to enable significant growth, especially with the latest nRF54 family utilising cutting-edge 22nm semiconductor wafer technology, which will redefine the industry standard for performance, computational efficiency, and power consumption, reinforcing Nordic's commitment to leading the way in wireless connectivity solutions.

AI at the Edge Enabling the Internet of Things

Today, we minimise network traffic by distributing IoT intelligence to the edge. At the most basic level, edge processing enables IoT devices to locally sift through data to determine what data is not necessary to follow up on and what data indicates that the situation is changing and should be forwarded for further analysis. Machine learning enables edge devices to not only check if data exceeds preset thresholds, but also to deduce the meaning of the change and then take action.

Nordic calls this new capability AI at the edge, and it brings a number of key advantages to IoT products: inputs can be processed locally in real time, so there's no need to use bandwidth to send raw data over a wireless link, and there's no time wasted waiting for a response from the cloud. Secondly, local processing uses less power than sending data over the air, so IoT devices can run longer or use smaller batteries.

Perhaps most importantly, by adding edge AI to their devices, Nordic customers can add innovative features to their products to differentiate themselves from the competition.

As adoption of AI at the edge accelerates, customers are looking for efficient local processing, low power consumption, seamless connectivity in smaller form factors, and effective security. But this poses key technical challenges in ensuring a balance between performance and energy efficiency while integrating AI accelerators and ensuring effective thermal management while complying with connectivity standards.

We address these challenges by integrating edge machine learning into our solutions. For example, the nRF54 family of SoCs brings advanced processing power and energy efficiency to edge applications, supporting AI inference on low-power devices such as sensors, wearables and industrial IoT systems. By combining low-power Bluetooth with scalable computing power, we enable developers to build smart devices that process data locally while maintaining connectivity to the cloud.

As the AI at the edge trend matures, Nordic's commitment to energy-efficient innovation and seamless connectivity will continue to support industries in meeting the challenges of smart computing infrastructure.

Pioneering new possibilities in connectivity

The global challenges we face today, while significant, are not unprecedented. Industries have always dealt with complexities, including economic downturns, supply chain disruptions and geopolitical changes. The key to success is the ability to anticipate risks, develop strategic plans and execute. Through careful preparation and adaptability, we can mitigate uncertainty and stand up for ourselves in the face of obstacles.

Nordic's involvement in the semiconductor industry goes beyond the development of innovative products and focuses on increasing the resilience of the supply chain. Recently, Nordic joined industry leaders at the groundbreaking ceremony for TSMC's first European semiconductor facility in Dresden, Germany. This new facility marks an important step in strengthening the global semiconductor ecosystem and enabling localised advanced manufacturing capabilities. As a fabless company, Nordic benefits from this development, which highlights the strategic importance of a strong and self-sufficient supply chain.

The rapid proliferation of the Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence at the Edge and Cellular IoT solutions is expected to drive significant advances in China's semiconductor industry by 2025, and Nordic sees tremendous potential for innovation and growth in China, especially as industries increasingly adopt connected technologies to streamline operations and improve efficiencies.

Nordic Semiconductor, a global leader in low-power wireless connectivity, is committed to ‘simplifying life through the Internet of Everything’ and provides cutting-edge IoT and wireless solutions to advance the semiconductor industry in China. Through continuous innovation, strong partnerships and a customer-centric approach, we aim to open up new possibilities in connectivity and help shape a smarter, more connected future by 2025 and beyond.
