December 24 news, according to the British media ‘Financial Times’ local time on the 20th of this month reported, technology giant Broadcom Broadcom CEO Chen Fuyang (Hock Tan) mentioned in an interview, it is busy with AI semiconductor business, currently has no intention of acquiring Intel.
Chen Fuyang said, on the one hand, it consumes a lot of resources in AI semiconductors, this part of the business has attracted a lot of attention; on the other hand, he did not receive an invitation to participate in the acquisition of Intel, he will only promote new mergers and acquisitions in the case of feasible.
Chen Fuyang is known for his bold acquisitions: as Broadcom's stock acronym AVGO indicates, today's new Broadcom was created by Chen Fuyang's Anhua above the $37bn acquisition of the old Broadcom in 2015; and by the end of 2023, Broadcom had completed a $69bn (IT Home note: currently around RMB 503.316bn) acquisition of VMware.
However, this ‘merger and acquisition maniac’ is not without a moment in the acquisition deal hit a wall: Broadcom announced plans to buy Qualcomm in 2017, after being rejected by Qualcomm Broadcom chose the route of hostile takeover, but the deal ultimately did not come to fruition. Chen Fuyang said in the interview that this experience told him not to conduct hostile takeover operations again.
But Chen Fuyang also declared that Broadcom is still open to potential acquisitions in the field of hardware and software, ‘so to speak, we are in the consideration stage.’
In AI semiconductors, Chen Fuyang said large technology companies are arithmetic chip ‘big bets’, these Broadcom's existing or potential customers are in a hurry to formulate a 3 ~ 5 years of medium-term AI infrastructure investment plan and full implementation, until the exhaustion of funds or shareholders will oppose to stop.
Chen Fuyang said Broadcom customers will build AI computing clusters containing millions of chips by 2027, as the tech giants see a huge opportunity to generate more revenue from the AI business.
As for general-purpose AI, Chen believes that no one knows how AGI as a goal will ultimately be realised, but the possibility is so enticing that it's attracting investment from the tech community as a whole.
