The increase in connected applications in the automotive and industrial markets is driving the demand for wired connectivity solutions with higher bandwidth, lower latency and greater security. Reliable, secure communication network solutions are essential to transmit and process data as intended. Microchip Technology Inc. today announced the introduction of a new family of ATA650x CAN FD System Foundation chips (SBC). The range is fully integrated with a high-speed CAN FD transceiver and 5V low voltage drop regulator (LDO) in compact 8-pin, 10-pin and 14-pin packages, saving space.
The ATA650x CAN FD SBC occupies very little space: the VDFN8 package is 2 mm x 3mm, the VDFN10 package is 3mm x 3mm, and the VDFN14 package is 3mm x 4.5 mm. The SBC has a built-in high-speed CAN FD transceiver that supports data sending and receiving rates of up to 5 Mbps.
As a powerful solution for space - and power-constrained applications, the series of SBCS has extremely low power consumption, with a typical sleep current of only 15 μA. The ATA650x SBC can control the VCC supply voltage through the bus signal, thereby reducing the current consumption of the automotive electronic control unit (ECU). To further reduce power consumption, the SBC disables the LDO in sleep mode, thus disabling the MCU power supply.
The ATA650x device safety features include fail-safe, protective and diagnostic functions to provide reliable bus communication in advanced networks. The ATA650x device is resistant to electromagnetic discharge (ESD) and has electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) performance, making it a powerful solution for applications operating in harsh environments.
The integrated SBC solution supports "functional safety readiness" to help customers achieve ISO 26262 safety certification or the required ASIL level. In addition, the SBC is AEC-Q100 class certified to operate in the temperature range from -40°C to +150°C.
Rudy Jaramillo, Microchip's vice president of Analog Power and Interface, said: "Our compact CAN FD SBC is designed for space-constrained applications and specifically addresses the critical need for toughness in demanding environments. This highly integrated solution minimizes board space requirements and helps customers reduce design complexity, contributing to system-level cost savings."
The ATA650x CAN FD SBC is one of Microchip's extensive connectivity solutions, including standard LIN and CAN transceivers as well as a system-level package (SiP) with integrated microcontrollers. For more information, visit Microchip's SBC web page.
