Nordic Semiconductor has launched its latest iot prototyping platform, Nordic Thingy:91 X, for LTE-M, NB-IoT, Wi-Fi SSID positioning, DECT NR+ and GNSS applications. Thingy:91 X simplifies the iot prototyping process for developers with its comprehensive onboard capabilities, which simplifies the development of cellular iot applications and shortens time to market.

Globally certified and free of US tariffs

Thingy:91 X is a battery-powered device that features Nordic's award-winning new nRF9151 system-level package (SiP). The nRF9151 is the most compact cellular iot SiP for battery powered and global positioning applications. Compared to Nordic's nRF9160 and nRF9161 SiP, it takes up 20% less floor space, is exempt from U.S. tariffs, and is certified for global operation. The nRF9151 SiP supports LTE-M, NB-IoT, GNSS, and DECT NR+ technologies.

The Thingy:91 X is equipped with multiple sensors to monitor environmental conditions and track movement. It is also equipped with user programmable buttons and leds as well as multiple antennas. The 1350 mAh rechargeable lithium polymer battery is monitored by Nordic's award-winning nPM1300 Power Management IC (PMIC), ensuring exceptionally long battery life and precise fuel metering. Onomondo and Wireless Logic pre-installed SIM cards enable instant cellular iot connectivity.

Once the initial setup is complete, the iot prototype seamlessly connects to the network interface of nRF Cloud, a Nordic Cloud service platform optimized for the company's wireless solutions that accurately identifies the location of Thingy:91 X.

Optimal balance between positioning accuracy and power consumption

Thingy: 91X integrates Nordic's nRF7002 Wi-Fi collaboration IC, which supports Wi-Fi Service Set Identifier (SSID) location and complements other location technologies. The iot proof-of-prototype platform is capable of supporting multiple location technologies, including cellular (single cell (" SCELL ") and multi-cell (" MCELL ")), Wi-Fi, and GNSS, combined with nRF Cloud location services, enabling developers to perfectly balance location accuracy and power consumption. This makes Thingy:91 X an ideal choice for asset tracking applications.
